Our Sustainability Strategy

Roadmap to 2030

Here at ACC Liverpool, we’ve committed to becoming Carbon Net Zero by 2030, twenty years ahead of the events industry target of 2050.

Our roadmap to 2030

We know how important it is that we minimise the environmental impact of our operations across the ACC Liverpool venue – and indeed the rest of the campus – to do our bit to help tackle the climate crisis.

Our Sustainability Strategy outlines six fundamental aims to ensure sustainability is at the heart of everything we do.

events, waste and energy

Procurement, catering and travel

Expanding on these six primary areas, we are focused on:

  • Events: working with suppliers, event managers, and staff to organise environmentally conscious events, and spread awareness of our environmental responsibilities.

  • Waste: proper waste management is a key aspect of our sustainability strategy – from the prevention of waste production to recycling and proper disposal.

  • Energy: we’re working hard to decarbonise our energy supply and explore more sustainable alternatives to power our venue.

  • Procurement: we’re keen to integrate several measures to improve the sustainability of our procurement process, including buying locally, purchasing sustainable materials, and working with environmentally-friendly contractors.

  • Catering: this is a huge part of event sustainability, and we’re exploring plant-based recipes, working with local suppliers, and working with Sodexo Live!, clients, and Klimato to reduce the carbon emissions caused by our catering services.

  • Travel: travel contributes around 60% to an event’s carbon footprint, so we’re committed to finding ways to reduce this – from working with local and national providers to incentivise public transport to trialling an integrated public transport/ticketing model.

Keeping these six areas in mind, some actions we’ve taken on our journey so far include:

  • Using 100% renewable electricity across the entire campus.

  • Food waste is processed on site or donated to local charities across the city region.

  • Harvesting rain water across the venues for more reusable water usage, providing 40% of our flushing water.

  • Achieving Gold status as a Green Meetings accredited venue.

  • Championing sustainable industry events like low carbon gigs in partnership with Act 1.5 and Massive Attack.

Understanding event sustainability

Not only do we understand the essential nature of venue and event sustainability, but it’s incredibly important for us to lead by example, which is why we are working hard to achieve our goal of Carbon Net Zero by 2030.

Therefore, alongside our Sustainability Strategy, we also have an Energy Policy Statement which is available online. We are members of the National Arena Association (NAA), and with this support the NAA Green Guide for touring events.

We are committed to learning and evolving towards a more sustainable future with the support and collaboration of our staff, clients, contractors, and stakeholders.
