PRODUCTION CASE STUDY
In February ACC Liverpool welcomed BBC Worldwide for the sixth time for its annual Showcase.
The event is the world’s largest international TV market to be hosted by a single distributor. It attracts around 700 of the world’s leading TV and digital buyers, as well as many of Britain’s top programme makers from both the BBC and the independent production community, who come to purchase and promote the latest British content releases. It is also attended by award-winning producers and on-screen talent.
The venue, home to BT Convention Centre, Echo Arena and Exhibition Centre Liverpool, undergoes a transformation each year ahead of the four day event with a week-long build period.
Hall two of BT Convention Centre was converted to house specially constructed digi booths so that the TV buyers could watch 3,000 hours of British content.
The in-house production team at ACC Liverpool, together with service partner UK Rigging and design agency BJA Design, designed and installed a bespoke rigging solution. This comprised the rigging for two large structures to house the hundreds of digi booths, and a complex ‘mother-grid’ system to suspend 30 bespoke ‘ribbon’ structures and complementary LED lighting.
Nicky Norman, ACC Liverpool head of production and technical services, said: “The rigging aspects of BBC Worldwide Showcase are complex and, working with our service partner UK Rigging, we were pleased to have the opportunity to provide a bespoke rigging solution for this prestigious event.
“The ‘mothergrid’ was a complex 52 hoist lift, with over 100 drop wires, a 230 point mark-out and 570m of truss used on-site. Everything was pre-rigged in advance of BJA Design arriving at the venue and installation went smoothly. The transformation of the hall and the use of the space was spectacular.”
This year’s star-studded event included a celebration of 25 years since Absolutely Fabulous burst onto our TV screens. Both Jennifer Saunders and Joanna Lumley hosted a gala evening. Two separate dinners took place in Echo Arena – the first evening featured a British, bold and creative theme and the venue was then transformed overnight for a Blue Planet II theme.
Other celebrities who attended BBC Worldwide Showcase included Let It Shine judges Gary Barlow and Dannii Minogue, Sherlock star Mark Gatiss and Top Gear’s Matt LeBlanc. Ed Westwick, Joel Dommett and Call The Midwife’s Steven McGann and Heidi Thomas were among other guests who took to the red carpet.
Kerrin MacPhie, director of conference and exhibition sales at ACC Liverpool, said: “Due to its nature and scale, BBC Worldwide Showcase is one of the most complex events in our programme and has been a key conference since its first outing to Liverpool in 2012.
“It gives us the opportunity to show the flexibility of our venue and the impressive transformations that can be achieved in each space.
“Each year the event changes in terms of the use and demands on the building. We have formed a unique partnership with the BBC Worldwide team to ensure the continued success of Showcase and a combined dedication to raising the bar each year.”
The event has featured some of British television’s most loved personalities since its first outing to Liverpool in 2012 including Sir David Attenborough, Peter Capaldi, Michelle Keegan, Chris Evans, Rowan Atkinson, Keeley Hawes, James Norton and John Cleese as well as David Beckham, who appeared at last year’s Showcase to promote his documentary.
Temporary employment created within ACC Liverpool to service the event in 2016 equated to 680 man days, in areas such as cleaning, stewarding and catering.
MacPhie added: “BBC Worldwide Showcase provides a fantastic opportunity to showcase our city and our venue to hundreds of international delegates.
“We look forward to continuing our partnership so that we can help develop this globally recognised event.”
