National Cancer Research Institute (NCRI)
The National Cancer Research Institute conference, the largest oncology conference in the UK, brought together a diverse audience of clinicians, scientists, PhD students, nurses, patients and carers over three and a half days.
The event has been held at ACC Liverpool since 2010 and in 2014 will celebrate its 10th birthday. The NCRI conference attracts 2,000 delegates and involves a number of breakout rooms and fringe meetings during the conference and exhibition.
As Sharon Vanloo, NCRI project and events manager, says: “The venue listens to what we want and is very adaptable, particularly around the number of breakout rooms needed and the quick turnaround times required because of our busy programme.
“Our requirements change yearly but the staff always try to find a solution to any last minute requests – and I’ve thrown up a few. Yet everything is dealt with seamlessly. One year, we had an art exhibition in the lower galleria of the convention centre and completely transformed it, resulting in ACC Liverpool’s chief executive Bob Prattey saying it was the best use of space he’d seen.”
In 2011 the exhibition took place in Hall 2 of BT Convention Centre and Echo Arena was already occupied with another event. For the conference dinner, the ACC Liverpool team suggested building a marquee on adjacent land where the new Exhibition Centre Liverpool is being built.
“The dinner was outstanding, so we did it again last year,” says Sharon.
“It worked so well because ACC Liverpool was flexible and allowed us to start building five days before we were due on site.”
Sharon added: “We bring together 2,000 delegates for every event and overall feedback is that ACC Liverpool provides excellent conference and event facilities in a city that is a hub for the medical sector.”
