It’s all systems go for Exhibition Centre Liverpool with the steelwork getting off the ground as we head towards a year from opening.

Construction started in January and there’s already plenty of activity on our waterfront site which is due to complete in summer next year.

The steelwork is starting to take shape as the development on the exhibition centre and integrated hotel gathers pace.  This summer we start work on the bridge link which will integrate Exhibition Centre Liverpool with our existing arena and convention centre.

We already have conferences and exhibitions confirmed.  RenewableUK,  the UK's leading not for profit renewable energy trade association, will bring more than 4,500 delegates, 250 exhibitors and 190 speakers to its three day conference in October next year.  In June 2011 we hosted RenewableUK Offshore Wind and now we will be able to welcome back the Annual Conference and Exhibition thanks to our expanded space. The event will take place in the new centre as well as the upper level of BT Convention Centre.

As Garth Halliday, director of events, marketing and membership at RenewableUK, comments: “We had a positive experience when we held our event in 2011 with strong delegate feedback.  Although we love the city and the venue we found that ACC Liverpool was unable to accommodate our expanding exhibition.

“The addition of Exhibition Centre Liverpool will allow us to return to the city next year.  The team has kept us informed with their plans for the centre and we are confident that delegates and exhibitors will be impressed.  We are pleased that RenewableUK Annual Conference and Exhibition 2015 will take place in a new complex in a stunning location.”

Exhibition Centre Liverpool will be capable of hosting trade and consumer exhibitions; large scale banquets; concerts and sports events.

Meanwhile we confirmed the first exhibition bookings for our new venue.  They are the Federation of Petroleum Suppliers FPS Expo which will take place in 2016, 2017 and 2018; Bliss Wedding Shows’ The Liverpool Wedding Show in 2015, 2016 and 2017; Girls Day Out in 2015, 2016 and 2017 and MCM Expo group in 2016. The Allergy and Free From Show North and UK Baby and Toddler Show organised by UKFE, which both currently take place at ACC Liverpool, will migrate and grow in the new centre from 2015.

Phar Partnerships is working with us to secure a title sponsor for the complex. The project offers a really exciting sponsorship opportunity for a brand to engage with a huge audience of attendees.

The existing 7,125 sqm of exhibition space at ACC Liverpool will increase to 15,225 sqm of integrated and flexible exhibition facilities.  It will be a single building containing 8,100 sqm which can be divided into three 2,700 sqm halls.  It will feature a glazed atrium with waterfront views, food and beverage outlets, multiple meeting rooms, external balconies, external exhibition space and a business centre.

Flying Start
The first six months of 2014 have been busy with a series of high profile events taking place at our venue.  We welcomed the new Doctor Who and the Top Gear team – and that was just for BBC Worldwide Showcase which returned to ACC Liverpool for the third time.

In February we welcomed 725 of the world’s top TV buyers to watch 2,800 hours of programming in specially adapted digi-booths in hall two of BT Convention Centre. Echo Arena was used for the first time for the event, which is in its 38th year, and transformed for spectacular dinners.

In March we welcomed thousands of experts to the Diabetes UK Professional Conference 2014, one of the UK’s largest healthcare meetings.

Around 3,000 professionals and scientists attended, which provided delegates with the opportunity to find out about the latest scientific research, hear from keynote speakers, share knowledge and network.

We provided support to Diabetes UK, which had a number of different elements to its event, through our Advantage by ACC Liverpool programme which provides bespoke venue and destination assistance for conference organisers.

This included assisting with a roadshow which took place at Liverpool ONE shopping centre during the conference, encouraging the public to get free Type 2 diabetes risk assessments and meet expert dieticians.  
We also helped to organise a fun run which saw around 130 delegates and exhibitors, plus some of our sporty staff, braving a bracing early morning 5km run along the waterfront.

We welcomed Liverpool FC footballers to the club’s inaugural Players’ Awards Dinner last month.

Aside from events taking place, we confirmed that we will host 3,000 international delegates from more than 40 countries to the UNI Global Union Congress in 2018.
Members of the organisation’s board, which includes general secretaries from UK-based unions, campaigned to bring the event to the UK and served as ambassadors for Liverpool.

As Philip Jennings, general secretary of UNI Global Union, said: “We are delighted to be coming to the great city of Liverpool in 2018 for our world congress.  

“I know that together UNI and Liverpool will deliver a spectacular event which will both highlight the plight of workers and offer solutions.”

This month we are looking forward to our busiest June in recent years.  A total of 10 events are taking place, including many over several days, in the convention centre with five events in the arena.  It will be the busiest June in the past five years, with more than 45,000 visitors expected through the doors, generating over £20m in economic impact for the city.

Conferences include NHS Confederation, the British Association of Urological Surgeons, Royal College of Nursing and Unite.  The rest of the year will bring a raft of events including the National Association of Pension Funds, National Cancer Research Institute and Shop Direct.


IFB Giants

Liverpool is preparing for a monumental summer of events, including the International Festival for Business, with a major professional, cultural and leisure programme which promises to be the biggest and best since Capital of Culture in 2008.

Global events include the International Festival for Business (IFB) which will bring tens of thousands of visitors to Liverpool over 50 days in June and July.  The festival, the biggest event of its kind in the UK for more than half a century, will be a global showcase for great British industry and will champion UK businesses to new markets, new products and new partners. 

More than 250 IFB-focused events will take place all over the city including several at ACC Liverpool such as ACCELERATE 2014, Undersea Defence Technology, International Sport Business Conference and Made in the UK.

The Business Visits & Events Partnership (BVEP) will be hosting its Partner meeting and has created a comprehensive programme of site visits and briefings around its programme. Among the industry associations currently planning events during IFB are the BVEP, ABPCO, ICCA, HBAA, AEV/ESSA and EVCOM.

A series of meetings will take place at ACC Liverpool on July 1 and a networking reception will be hosted at the Liver Building, sponsored by the Concerto Group, to enable the representatives of key industry groups to meet together.  To register go to:

As Bob Prattey, chief executive of ACC Liverpool, says: "IFB is bringing in more opportunities such as UDT, which is a new defence sector for us to explore, and the return of Accelerate which will see thousands of entrepreneurs gathering in our venue.

"It will be an exciting period for visitors to our venue and to the city and we expect there to be a real buzz around the region.”

The cultural programme in June and July is expected to draw huge crowds and provide a boost to tourism.  Highlights include the Biennial, the return of the Royal de Luxe giants, a huge street theatre event which attracted hundreds of thousands of visitors when it last came to the city in 2012, and the Open Championship at Royal Liverpool Golf Club. 


We were thrilled to be named the Best UK Conference Centre for the second year running and would like to thank you all for your continued support.  We now have 45 awards under our belt.

Scooping gold in the coveted category at the M & IT Industry Awards not once but twice is a phenomenal achievement.  

We are extremely proud to have retained this award - regarded as the ‘Oscar’ of the meeting and events industry – as it is voted for by you, our clients and industry colleagues.

The win has provided a boost to the whole of the ACC Liverpool team and we’re already planning how to make it a hat-trick.  In the meantime we’ll be sure to continue to live up to our reputation as the Best UK Conference Centre and deliver an excellent service for all your events.

Congratulations also to Liverpool Convention Bureau which was awarded bronze in the Best UK Convention Bureau category.

Our 45 awards range from in-house AV team to Best CSR Initiative.  Last month we received the prize for Excellence in Business Tourism at the Liverpool City Region Tourism Awards 2014.



Our venue underwent a dramatic transformation when we welcomed Audi for its UK National Forum.

We first welcomed Audi in 2012 for its National Forum, an event that gives 700 staff and dealers the opportunity to receive updates on the past year’s performance and look at the year ahead.  As Audi UK event manager Jane Pettman says: “The venue had worked really well for us previously, we like the exclusivity and the fact that we can brand the venue as we like.  Location is good and the team is great to work with and really flexible.”

One of the attractions for Audi was being able to brand our venue.  Our ACC Liverpool logo was removed from the galleria entrance and replaced with the Audi logo and slogan.  Two top of the range cars were parked either side of the doors as delegates arrived.  Signage throughout the venue was Audi branded.

Delegates attended a plenary session followed by smaller, interactive seminars.  A final presentation was delivered in the auditorium by Dr Steve Peters, the Olympic GB cycling team’s psychiatrist.

This was followed by a drinks reception held downstairs in the convention centre and a product show in hall two which included a track for the vehicles to drive along to give the ultimate view of the new cars.  Bowl food and food stations provided a more relaxed ambience.  

Delegate feedback was positive, as Jane says: “The venue works really well from a guest management perspective and there is plenty of space to move people around.  Using the different areas keeps people engaged and interested.”

Tom Lechthaler, ACC Liverpool’s head of events, added: “Audi was able to effectively use our venue as a blank canvas and use every space in a really creative way.  The end result was stunning.”


Here’s a small snapshot of 2014 so far.

We presented a cake and champagne to the British Society for Rheumatology which celebrated its 30th anniversary during a conference with us.

We invited corporate and agency buyers to a Showcase which included presentations about our production services; venue tours; a taster dining experience courtesy of our in-house caterers Centerplate and its suppliers as well as cocktails and networking.  

We’ve been busy meeting clients and industry colleagues at Confex and IMEX Frankfurt.
